Becoming and remaining president

Directed by Cédric Tourbe

How, in the France of the 1980s and 90s, did genial communicators invent a new media script to help them seize the Elysée Palace and hold on to power?

The small screen was already the king of media, and could prove both a formidable springboard and a fatal trap for politicians. Mitterrand and Chirac understood this to their cost, before succeeding, under the impetus of a few secret strategists, in taming television and turning it in their favor. At the helm of these radical turnarounds were the shadowy advisors the Americans call «spin doctors».
