Becoming and remaining president
Directed by Cédric Tourbe
How did talented communicators in France in the 1980s and 1990s manage to invent a new media narrative that paved the way for the takeover of the Élysée Palace and hold on to power?
The small screen was already the king of media, and could prove both a formidable springboard and a fatal trap for politicians. Mitterrand and Chirac understood this to their cost, before succeeding, under the impetus of a few secret strategists, in taming television and turning it in their favor. At the helm of these radical turnarounds were the shadowy advisors the Americans call «spin doctors».
